Work safety bill passed by WA’s Upper House after long fight for industrial manslaughter laws
Wednesday marked a significant day in Regan Ballantine’s fight for justice after the death of her 17-year-old son Wesley on a construction site.
Ms Ballantine’s son Wesley died in January 2017 when he fell 12 metres to the ground while working on a commercial fit-out at Perth’s old post office building in the CBD.
Almost three years later, the WA Government’s Work Health and Safety Bill — which introduces industrial manslaughter as a crime — passed through the Upper House last night after lengthy debate.
“To all of the families that have stood alongside me, yesterday our loved ones’ lives were given more meaning,” Ms Ballantine said.
“Their lives will leave a legacy that will benefit future generations and help to ensure that others never stand in our shoes.
“I have no doubt that they are looking down on us today and they are very proud.”
